Although I lost interest in the furry fandom, furry things is the only thing I can draw : / I wish I could draw non-furry things.
I am a big animal lover and video/PC gamer. I love lots of things that are way too large to list them all here. I'll just rattle off a few of them: wolves, sharks, ferrets, dogs, Death Note, Tale Spin, reading ghost stories, Godzilla, Sam and Max, fruits, etc etc...
Am I alone in thinking the animation industry sucks nowadaysposted May 14th 2009, 8:48PM
Mood: Lost
Is there anyone out there besides me who is dissatisifed with the state of the animation industry these days? I'm strictly talking about American works, not stuff from far off lands. It is my opinion that the older movies were much better than the ones we have now. They have better music, characters, story and 'heart,' if that makes any sense at all. I feel the same way with the TV shows too, but this post will focus on the movies.
Anyway, movies in the past were pretty varied. You have your typical family flicks, comedies, action, horror (somewhat) and even drama movies. These days all I ever see are comedies, and bad comedies at that. It's probably just me, but I think these companies concentrate more on star power (let's cram in as much A-actors as we can!) and silly jokes (let's insert a wisecrack every millisecond!), and realism (Check out our new CGI movie! The main character has FUR, and not just ANY fur, but WAVY FUR!) than anything else.
I can't even think of a single recent animated character that was as memorable as the ones in the past. Also, there hasn't been a hand-drawn movie (known as classical) for years now. I have nothing against the computer medium, but hand drawn art have always looked more pleasing to my eyes, particularly forest scenes.
Although Toy Story is awesome (it's still my favourite Pixar movie), I do blame it for the whole glut of CGI movies for the last several years.
Luckily Disney has The Princess and the Frog in the works and maybe that will encourage more clasically-animated movies in the future. On the flip side, Disney also made the horrid Home on the Range so if this movie bombs I'm afraid we'd be straight back to square one again. : /
Does anyone share my sentiments or am I alone in this?
I find it funny that everyone were always complaining how movies with musical numbers in them were all sugary sweet and cheesy, yet when companies started coming out with movies that didn't feature any singing whatsoever, those moviies were worse than the movies with musical numbers. I honestly didn't mind songs in movies. In fact, some of my favourite songs are from animated movies.
P.S. It was for this reason that I started watching anime, something I wouldn't have touched with a ten-foot pole otherwise. I haven't seen any new shows for a while now though. I've got a whole bunch of Tales of the Abyss eps on my hard drive and haven't gotten around to viewing them yet due to lack of time.
THE END
Just for fun, here's my top ten favourite 2D movies in no particular order
01) The Fox and the Hound (excellent movie dealing with prejudice)
02) The Secret of NIMH (great movie if you don't count the horrible ending)
03) A Goofy Movie (my favourite Disney movie)
04) Watership Down (scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. Awesome novel)
05) The Plague Dogs (excellent novel too)
06) The Lion King (not the BEST movie as many people claim, but still entertaining)
07) The Little Mermaid (I watched it so many times I memorized an entire scene word for word. I can't do it now though)
08) All Dogs go to Heaven (critics hated it for its violence and adult content, but that's why I love it)
09) The Great Mouse Detective (the best mousy movie, and it's a detective story!)
10) Either Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty. SB had a better villain though, so I'll go with that.
